Concept

The concept of a capability maturity model was originally developed in 1987 by the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Melon University in the form of the Capability Maturity Model Integration (Wikipedia) process improvement approach.

The model allows an entity to asses their capability against a standard reference model, judge whether that capability is what is required and decide on actions to improve the capability where necessary. It also provides an opportunity for benchmarking across organisations, industries and regions.

This approach has been adapted to other areas including People, Project Management and Knowledge Management.

Approach

The approach involves measuring key process areas against a maturity scale from 1 to 5 (some models use 1-4, 1-3 or other levels).
Descriptors of the levels of maturity vary.
